Makyle’s Eulogy

MAKYLE4LIFE

Makyle, or affectionately known throughout his childhood as "Kyly", was a truly remarkable young man whose light and energy touched all who knew him.

Born on 5th January 2003, in King George Hospital, Kyly was the first of three children to Ayesha and Julian. He was also the first Grandchild and the first nephew on both sides of the family. From very early on, he began to shape the world around him with an adventurous spirit and a heart full of love.

As a Son, brother, and friend, Kyly's loyalty and compassion were unmatched. He was a devoted older brother to Zanaiya and Zhanae, and a super cool cousin to Tamaiya, Jharrell, Tylee and so many others; always protective and guiding them with a wisdom beyond his years. His rare ability to make others feel valued was one of his most revered qualities.

Makyle’s journey through life was marked by his boundless curiosity and passion. As an infant at Buckhurst Hill Community Primary School, he developed his love for learning, dancing, acting and music, including his talent for playing the drums. His natural ability in Sport was evident from his Rugby games and football matches. He was a proud and much loved member of the Bealonians football team for many years until 2015, when he found his love for Basketball.

This stamped a life-changing decision to switch from football to basketball, a move that would set the stage for his growth as both a player and a mentor. Makyle was eager to excel in the sport, and took initiative to practice before and after school at West Hatch Secondary School.

After his move to Haggerston School, he began training at Raines Foundation and at the Copper Box with the London Lions Under 14’s.

A fast learner, Makyle quickly developed his skills and understanding of the game and He became a key contributor to the team. Respected and well-liked by both staff and students, Makyle was known for his polite and well-mannered demeanor. Maturing beyond his years, he led by example, setting the standard for his peers both on and off the court.

At 13, he joined Hackney Jedis basketball club, where his natural talent further blossomed and firm friendships turned into family. His dedication to basketball led him to numerous achievements, including the prestigious Joe White Award; a testament to his determination and character.

Beyond his athletic pursuits, Kyly's compassion for others was evident. In 2020, he traveled to Los Angeles, volunteering with a nonprofit to support unhoused people. He cooked meals, connected individuals to vital resources, and embodied the spirit of service. Back in London, he would do the same - unassisted - preparing meals for those in need, a kindness and selflessness that defined who he was.

In September 2021, Makyle commenced his first year of his degree at the University of Essex, studying sports and Exercise Science. He quickly became a fixture on the basketball court, and within a short time he advanced from the BUCS3 to BUCS2 team.

Kyly excelled both academically and athletically.

But it wasn’t just his skills that set him apart; it was his unwavering commitment to his personal growth, and the deep friendships he forged were cherished accomplishments. In his second year at Uni, Makyle shared a house with his friends Daljang (affectionately known as DJ), Martin, Alvin, Swedi, Mathew, honorary housemate Michael, and along with the many other friends that regularly spent time at the house, a lifetime brotherhood was formed.

In March 2022 Makyle joined the Halfords family as a Sales specialist. His passion for wisdom and tinkering was further developed and he became a much loved staff member and colleague.

In April 2022, Kyly's life took a monumental turn when he met Mya, his soulmate. Mya seamlessly became part of the family, and together they shared dreams, adventures, and a deep love and understanding for one another.

That same year, Kyly was honored as the first-ever YES Charity Ambassador. In this role, he hosted speaking events, participated in interviews, and starred in a short film highlighting youth in sports. Through this work, Kyly gave back to the community that had helped to shape him, touching the lives of many young people and inspiring them to reach for their dreams.

Kyly's passion for basketball continued in 2022 when he was selected to play for the Essex Rebels in Division 3, alongside his dear friend DJ.

Makyle’s talent and dedication inspired those around him, and he continued to prove that he was not just an athlete, but a leader, both on and off the court.

One of the most defining chapters of Makyle’s life came in August 2023, when he was selected to study Kinesiology and Exercise Science abroad at the University of Mississippi, where he immersed himself in college life.

As a member of the International students board and a member of Ole Miss Black Student Union, he became a travel advocate for Americans looking to travel outside of the country, participating in the University of Mississippi study abroad program.

Makyle was also picked to join the Ole Miss Basketball Practice Team and the Travel Squad.

This gave Makyle the opportunity to travel and compete in many different states. His team went on to become champions at the Emory Invitationals—a testament to his drive and teamwork.

Though Kyly remained focused on his dreams, he was profoundly invested in the people around him. His bond with his Mother, sisters, Father, aunties, uncles and cousins, were central to his life. Makyle’s grandparents were a source of great support, and he always carried their wisdom and affection with him. He showed his family endless loyalty and devotion, and his love for them was always evident.

In 2024, Kyly and Mya traveled to Barcelona, Romania, and Amsterdam, creating unforgettable memories and further embracing their love for exploration. Kyly’s adventurous spirit and thirst for life were just a few of the qualities that made him truly unique.

Makyle’s legacy is one of generosity, upliftment, unity and love. In such a short time, he achieved so much. He led with compassion and he brightened the world around him. His memory will continue to guide us as we carry his spirit forward.

Kyly, you were the best of all of us. You will never be forgotten and you will live on in our hearts forever.
